Growing up isn’t as easy as we thought. In the process of growing up, we will inevitably lose our direction more than once. Then, we’ll start feeling that life is hopeless. We don’t even know what the purpose of living in this world is anymore. We’ll start to struggle with our lives.

Losing your direction

Eventually, we’re bound to feel miserable about life, especially when we are overwhelmed with problems and hardships. Then, we’ll lose sight of our destination. We forget our values, our dreams, and our purpose of living. It’s like driving a car without knowing where our destination is.

And sometimes, things get worse. We don’t even feel like living. What we do every day is not what we want to do. We just don’t feel alive anymore. After a hectic day, all we want to do is nothing.

Or maybe you’ll choose to lie on a bed and start dwelling on negative thoughts.

Or, perhaps, you decide to spend your night with Netflix until you feel exhausted and tired, because you know that’s the best way to escape reality.

(I don’t mean that spending time binging shows on Netflix is bad, but if your intention is to escape reality, then something need to change.)

But, no matter what your choice is, you know it’s not the right thing to do. You feel like you can do something more than that. You feel like you can do something more meaningful. You know you can do something to improve your situation.

Do something today that your future self will thank you for

When you realized you’re in this situation, you know something needs to change. So, you might ask, what can you do to improve this situation? To be honest, I don’t know. Everyone is facing different problems in their lives. There is no way I can give you suggestions without knowing what exactly you are facing.

But there is one question you can ask yourself to figure out the answer.

“What can I do that my future self will thank me for?”

It’s not an easy question to answer. But if you want to make a difference in your life, be sure to think about it thoroughly. Instead of dwelling on negative thoughts or doing nothing, spend some time to reflect. It requires self-awareness to get the right answer. You need to understand what you really want, what you are passionate about and what you are capable of.

You don’t need to think up a long list of things you can do to improve your life. It’s not about quantity. Start with one thing. A simple one will do. It doesn’t need to be something big, like travelling. It can be as simple as reading a motivational quote a day.

Focus on one simple thing, and scheduled it as a part of your life. It can even be something that takes less than 5 minutes to get done.

If you still can’t decide what to do, consider these examples:

1. Taking a short walk around the park every day. How long you decide to walk is up to you, 5 minutes or 20 minutes, anything is acceptable. Going on a short walk or exercising will definitely benefit you in the future, because health, as always, is the most important thing in your life.

2. Read 20 pages of a book every day. It doesn’t really matter how many pages you read, all you want is the benefit you gain from reading – to reduce your stress level and to increase your knowledge. Reading will grant you knowledge and a different perspective on life, which may change your life forever

3. Write 3 things you’re grateful for, every day. It’s easy to dwell on negative thoughts when we are struggling in our lives. So to counter the negativity, we need to fill up our lives with positivity. And, gratitude is the key. Practicing gratitude, undeniably will also benefit you in the long run; it is the key to happiness after all.

There are a lot of things you can do, but just focus on one. Focus on the one thing you can do to improve your life in the aspects of health, knowledge, finance, relationships or spirit. Stick to that one thing and make it a habit.

And you will see how that one thing will change your life, in a positive way.

The key here is to figure out that one thing you can do every day to make your life better. To find out the answer, you can yourself this question:

“What is the one thing I can do so that my future self will thank me?”

Keep in mind that it doesn’t need to be something big. If you want to make a positive change in your life, start small. Don’t try to do too many things at one time. It won’t last long and pretty soon, you will burn yourself out. Instead, focus on one thing and improve it bit by bit each day.

In the beginning, the impact of this practice on your life might not be obvious. Maybe it doesn’t directly help you to figure out what you want to do with the rest of your life. But, in the journey of finding the answer, at least you have something to commit to, at least you know you’re doing something that your future self will thank you for. And, one last thing:
