“Urgh, I don’t feel any motivation to work-out today”
Does this scenario seem familiar to you? Or, have you ever waked up in the morning, and this comes across your mind:
“I’m still exhausted; I wish I could take the day off.”
Situations like this happen all around the world every day. People will wake up feeling that they lack the motivation to work through the rest of the day. There will also be those who lack the motivation to stick to their daily routine.
We always give ourselves very good excuse to be lazy, procrastinate and be less productive. After all, we are human, we aren’t perfect, right?
Meanwhile, when some of us are slacking off, the top performers from different fields around the world are spending their time wisely.
Previously, I have written an article about not over-relying on motivation. But, in what situation do we really need motivation to help us?
1. To get started.
“Motivation is what gets you started. Habit is what keeps you going”
– Jim Rohn
It’s undeniable. We need motivation to start something new – start your own business, travel around the world or pursue your long time dream. When we decide to start a new project, we need motivation to push us forward and to overcome our inner conflict. We need support to make decisions, especially when it is a life changing decision.
Sometimes, when all you do is just plan, what you need is just some extra motivation to inspire you to take the first step. It doesn’t matter what you want to do, before taking the first step, you will always have lots of concern and things to be anxious about. In some cases, an inspirational quote will be more than enough to motivate you to take further action.
If you plan to start doing something unfamiliar or risky, then it is the right time to look for some motivation to overcome your inner fear.
2. Doing something out of your comfort zone.
This might be somewhat similar with the point above but here, we will be delving deeper. Starting something new requires motivation, sometimes a little extra push will be enough. But, if you want to start doing something out of your comfort zone, it’s going to take some time and a moderate amount of motivation to get you to step out of your comfort zone.
If you’re an introvert, it’s going to take more than motivation alone, to go to a party with unfamiliar friends. It requires courage. If you’re an extrovert, motivation alone won’t be enough to stop you from hanging out with your friends day in and day out, unless, you’re running out of money.
If you’re going to do something out of your comfort zone, then you need to be highly motivated to get started. Stepping out of your comfort zone isn’t easy; it also requires courage, and the right mindset.
3. To form a new habit/replace a bad habit.
Forming a new habit isn’t easy. It is simple to start a new routine, but it requires lots of determination to stick with it until it becomes a habit.
It’s even harder if you want to replace a bad habit with another habit. Self-awareness and discipline are needed in this case, as the bad habit has been a part of us for a long time.
It’s normal if you need some motivation to ensure you stick with the new routine. You need to stay motivated until the routine becomes a habit. If you aren’t motivated enough to change/form the habits, it’s not going to work. Without long lasting motivation, you’re probably going to give up after a few days of practicing the new habit.
4. During hard times.
You have experienced hardships in your life, right? What are the things you needed most at such a time? Support from your family, friends and spouse. You need words of encouragement from your closest acquaintances. You need them to motivate you, to encourage you, to tell you that everything is going to be alright in the end.
Sometimes, encouragement from acquaintances might just not be possible. In this case, some inspirational quotes, or a motivational video will help you to get through the hard times. Never underestimate the impact of these medias. A right quote, a right motivational videos or a right motivational speech will definitely have an uplifting effect on your mood.
5. When self-doubt occurs.
Once in a while in our life time, we will doubt ourselves. We will doubt our own abilities and strengths. As we lose confidence, self-doubt starts to occur. How long is it going to last? It depends on how fast you can regain your confidence.
It’s during this time where we need motivation to keep us going. We need some motivation from our closest acquaintances – parents, spouse, and best friends. We need affirmation from others, to rebuild our confidence and overcome our self-doubt. We need a third party to reaffirm our abilities.
Sometimes, an inspirational speech from a motivational speaker will also boost up our motivation and turn the tide around. It’s during times like these where we need some extra motivation to regain what we lost.
Every person in the world experiences their lives differently. There will be a lot of scenarios where motivation is needed. But here are the general ones I can think of.
The next time when you think that you’re lacking motivation to do something, make sure you’re not using it as an excuse. Perhaps, it is just your laziness that is preventing you from doing anything. It’s not every time that we need motivation to get ourselves moving. Sometimes, what we really need is discipline.
The purpose on writing this article is to provide you a guideline, so next time, you won’t abuse “lack of motivation” as an excuse to procrastinate.
