Let’s be honest with ourselves. We always spend our time either dwelling on the past or looking forward to the future. There is nothing wrong with that. However, how much time have you spent on doing these things? Why don’t you make use of your time more wisely instead?

Looking towards the future

Sometimes, people end up being so immersed in their imagination that they forget about reality. They visualise their future but end up forgetting the present. Planning for your future is still acceptable to a certain degree, but when you only spend your time visualising, planning your future without further action, your plan/dream will never come true. Instead of planning, you should focus on the ‘now’.

Planning is essential, but one must also realize that action is what matters the most. You can have a perfect plan to build a house, but without going through the construction process, what you have is just a perfect plan.

One may have a perfect business plan, but it doesn’t mean that he/she is going to build a successful business empire. Life doesn’t always go as we think it would, it’s unpredictable. The key is execution. It’s about how you execute your plan, despite of the changing environment.

Have you taken the first step to make your plan come true? How determined are you to stick with your plan, despite of the challenges? How adaptable are you to the changing environment?

These are what matter the most. Undeniably, not everyone acts in this way. There are some who act in the opposite way, they dwell on the past.

Looking back at the past

While some are looking forward for their future, some choose to dwell on the past. This is even worse. Spending your time dwelling on the past will never ever benefit you. Indeed, it will only negatively influence your mood. It only makes everything worse off. Instead of filling your mind with negative events of the past, why don’t you focus on the present?

I don’t mean that you shouldn’t spend your time recalling your past or to look back and see how far you have come. Indeed, spending time on your past memories the right way is beneficial in a certain way, but only if you are aware of the fact that the most important moment is still “now”.

Looking back at your memories and being proud of your achievement is a good thing. It means you are successful in the past. You may consider using it as your motivation and momentum to keep moving forward. Looking at your past achievements is also one of the best ways to build up your confidence again after experiencing failures.

Recalling your failures in the past to learn some life lessons from it is a great way to spend your time. But, dwelling on it, struggling with it, and allowing it to destroy your winning mentality is not a wise option.

Looking forward to the future or looking back in the past isn’t wrong as long as you don’t overdo it. Meanwhile, we shouldn’t forget to live in the present.

Living in the present

In this contemporary world, many of us are busy trying to live our lives to the fullest. In the pursuit of happiness, fame, power, or perhaps our dreams and passions, we forget to slow down and experience the present. We spend most of our time either rushing too fast towards our goals, imagining the moment when we achieve our goals, or looking back at the good old days.

We forget about what matters the most. We forget that the only thing we have control over is the present, not the past or future.

“Lost time is never found again.”

– Benjamin Franklin

Living in the moment is the mindset that we should all have. We need to realize the fact that every single second we waste in our lives can never be found again. We will start to appreciate every single second that we have in our life, only when we understand that time is irreversible

Instead of doing tons of planning or dwelling on our failures, we should start to focus on the ‘now’. We need to realise that all we need to do is make use of the current moment wisely. We need to realize that time shouldn’t be wasted on things that won’t add value to our future.

We should stop procrastinating like we used to. We should also stop worrying about the future because we know if we live the present the right way, we are going to create our own future.

In short, we should appreciate and focus on every single moment in our live. Make use of it wisely and take time to indulge in the present.

Face it, we can never change the past, nor can we predict the future. But, there is one thing I’m sure about – if you focus on the present and make good use of your time in every single moment, you’ll create YOUR future.

“The best way to predict the future is to create it”

– Abraham Lincoln

So, if you find yourself spending too much time on the past or future, remind yourself that the most important moment is still the present.
